MTN RNR Rogaine When: 7 am, Sunday, September 10, 1995 Where: Los Alamos, NM. Meet in Rendija Canyon, off Barranca Mesa, just past where the paved road turns to dirt, just before the Sportsman's Club. Task: About 15 checkpoints between Guaje and Garcia Canyons, north of Los Alamos. Scoring: You must visit at least 8 checkpoints to "finish". The first 10 checkpoints count 1 point each. The 11th counts 2 points, the 12th counts 4 points, the 13th counts 8 points, and so on. The first 6 hours count as real time. Time between 6:00 and 6:30 counts 2x, time between 6:30 and 7:00 counts 4x, time between 7:00 and 7:30 counts 8x, and so on. Your score is your adjusted time (in minutes) divided by your adjusted points. For example, 13 checkpoints in 7:20 yields a score of 700/24=29.2. Low scores are better. RD: Blake Wood, (505) 662-4763, bwood@lanl.gov. As always in the MTN RNR series, no entry, no fees, no prizes. Checkpoints will be marked, but unmanned. Most will be in obvious locations on mesa tops, in saddles, or at stream confluences. All will be cross-country. An effort will be made to place checkpoints so there is no single obvious visiting order or route. The scoring method reflects a desire to get everyone back in some reasonable amount of time. Everyone should carry their own topo map, since the marked copy handed out at the start of the race may not be sufficiently legible to navigate by. The 7.5' USGS quads covering this area are Guaje Mountain and Puye. Alternately, Andrea Kron's 1:50,000 topo "Hiking Trails & Jeep Roads of Los Alamos County, Bandelier National Monument, and vicinity" (available at Otowi Station Science Museum Shop and Book Store) shows a more comprehensive set of roads and trails in this area. There is very little water on this course: only in Guaje Canyon, and (maybe) at Pine Spring and a yucky cattle tank near Canada de las Latas, and you'll need to treat these. Due to its cross-country nature, this course is potentially dangerous. Don't try it unless you can take care of yourself! This rogaine is still evolving. If you have comments or suggestions about the course, placement of checkpoints, or scoring, feel free to contact the RD. Help placing the checkpoints the day before the run, and retrieving them afterward, will be gratefully accepted.
